About

The Betty Carlton Beer Mile is a 1 mile race that will take place on December 30, 2017. The main focus of the beer mile is to raise money and rally the City of Charleston around the incredible walking technologies available to the disabled community. Proceeds will benefit I Got Legs: ReEnabled Race Course Program.

The exoskeleton is life changing, and Adam needs your help to share this technology with others so that they too can feel ReEnabled.

When I am in my robotic exoskeleton, I do not feel disabled, nor do I feel able-bodied; I feel ReEnabled.

Who is The Betty Carlton?

The Betty Carlton is the name of my robotic exoskeleton. Betty after my late grandmother, Betty, and Carlton, after Carlton Banks from my favorite TV show— The Fresh Prince of Bel Air.

The Betty C and I first met on December 30, 2015 at Roper St. Francis Hospital. It was the 10th anniversary of my car accident that day, and for the first time since that fateful night; I decided to celebrate!

I am currently using The Betty Carlton for my One- Million Steps: ReEnabled Race Tour where I am on pace to become the first paralyzed man in history to walk 1,000,000 steps in road races throughout the country using a robotic exoskeleton. We’ve been on some amazing adventures together while on tour, but none can compare to the 2016 Cooper River Bridge Run in my hometown of Charleston, SC.

People sometimes ask me what The Betty Carlton might look like if she were real a person. I tell them:

When I close my eyes...She cooks like Betty, and moves like Banks...
